Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity

The Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity (FHEO) administers and enforces federal laws and establishes policies that make sure all Americans have equal access to the housing of their choice.

US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)

In the United States, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is responsible for enforcing the Fair Housing Act of 1968, along with supporting community development, increasing home ownership, and fighting housing discrimination. As part of HUD’s mission, the agency provides low income housing to people in need in a number of ways including public HUD housing, rent subsidies, and grants to private agencies which intend to provide low-income housing. HUD housing is eligible for individuals with incomes below a certain level, and is part of the wide network of social services provided by the United States government to support people in need.

Connecticut Housing Finance Authority (CHFA)

CHFA is a leader in housing finance in Connecticut. Over the past 39 years, CHFA has helped more than 117,000 families and individuals purchase their first home and have provided financing for the construction and/or rehabilitation of more than 29,000 units of affordable rental housing for families and the elderly.

USDA Rural Development New England

Rural Development achieves its mission by helping rural individuals, communities and businesses obtain the financial and technical assistance needed to address their diverse and unique needs. Rural Development works to make sure that rural citizens can participate fully in the global economy.

Jefferson County Assisted Housing Corporation (JeffCo)

JeffCo is one of the largest non-profit corporations in the country. JeffCo owns and operates affordable multi-family housing and is a Section 8 Performance-Based Contract Administrator for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Weatherization Assistance Program

The Weatherization Residential Assistance Partnership (WRAP) is funded by the US Department of Energy, and assists income-eligible customers  to minimize energy-related costs and fuel usage in their homes.

DSS Energy Assistance

Department of Social Services provides assistance to low income individuals and families in meeting their heating costs. The assistance may be in the form of direct payment of heating bills, or cash payments to those who have heat included in their rent, and includes weatherization assistance as a conservation measure.

Oil Heat Assistance

In partnership with CITGO, Citizens Energy works with thousands of oil heat dealers and local fuel assistance agencies in 17 states to provide deliveries of home heating oil to those in need.

DSS Aging Services

The Department of Social Services (DSS) provides a broad range of services to the elderly, persons with disabilities, families, and individuals who need assistance in maintaining or achieving their full potential for self-direction, self-reliance and independent living. It administers over 90 legislatively authorized programs and one-third of the state budget.
